The first ever Britannia Open Table Tennis Championships indicated what perhaps is the start of a new era in Suffolk table tennis. Ryan Collins dominated the main events, and as predicted was the biggest threat to number one seed Dave Cole. Unfortunately with just one lady present there was no Ladies Singles event. The handicap singles enables players of all abilities the chance to win silverware, but after some intense battles it was two of the counties best players Andrew Warner & Fred Dove that contested the final, with Warner winning out. In the restricted singles both Sian Cook & Jason Annal made the semi finals losing to 'Munch' & Richard Goodhand respectively, in the final Goodhand dropped the first set before winning 3-1. The veterans event saw number three seed Andrew Dosher come through against Malcolm Collins, Warner & Dove. In the Junior singles Norwich player Dan Gugli went down 3-1 to Jake in their semi final, Jake faced brother Ryan in the final & found himself up against it as Ryan won 3-0. The plate cup final was contested between Jason Annal & Sian Cook with Annal getting home 3-1. In the men’s & open singles the main talking point was the awesome form of Ryan Collins who was seeded three & seeded to play Cole in the final of both events. In the men’s singles quarter finals, Brown took the first leg off Cole before going down & Malcolm Collins pushed son Ryan losing out 19-17 in the fourth end. In a tough five setter Warner overcame Jake, & Dove saw off Dosher 3-1. In the open singles quarter finals Ryan was a 3-0 winner over Ian Brown, as was Cole over Warner & Jake Collins over Richard Clapson (Clapson had earlier knocked out Dosher). In the other quarter final Gary Young had taken Dove to four sets. In both semi finals Ryan played Dove & while a few of the games were close the power & quickness of the youngster were telling as he made it through to both finals. Cole played Warner in the men's singles semi final & after dropping the first set was comfortable in the next three. In his open semi final Cole accounted for Jake 3-0. With Cole & Ryan getting to both the open & men’s singles final, by mutual consent both players agreed to play one game for both titles. The first set was a thriller as both players went for their shots & neither player could dominate the other, Cole saved two game points at 8-10 down & had game point himself before Ryan closed out at 15-13, the next set was all about Ryan’s power looping on both wings as he ran away with it 11-2, in the third end Cole barely got home at 9 but Ryan was not to be denied & again went to town in the fourth end as anything slightly long from Cole was dealt with in clinical fashion, Ryan won the fifth end to five & both titles & sent out a big signal not only to his fellow county players but to those ranked in the English top 100 as Cole is a seasoned player having beaten players like Shaun Gibson & David Attkinson in the past.
