Britannia 2007-2008 Championship

The Britannia closed was held on Sunday 7th Sept with a good entry of 26 players, which produced some top class table tennis.

The men's singles which had eight Suffolk ranked players including three of the top four ranked players, the first upset was when county number one Ryan Collins lost to Tony West county number six in the quarters. Tony then lost to Andy Dosher in the semi's. In the other half of the draw Andy Warner and Jake Collins met in the semi. Jake county number two Andy county number four, it was a good open game but Andy came out the stronger and won his place in the final. The final was a very close encounter with Andy Dosher's great control of the ball and Andy Warner's lighting fast backhand, but it was Warner who came through a five set battle the winner.

The women's singles was a straight final of Rachel West and Nicola Doy, Nicola was two strong this time and took the title. The downside was only two women entered, work needs to be done to get more women into the sport.

The restricted singles was won by up and coming Martin West, runner up was veteran John Seabrook.

Handicap singles was a second win of the day over Ryan Collins by Tony West.

The Vets was a mirror image of the men's, with Warner beating Dosher.

The most important section for me was the junior singles as we need younger players coming into the sport and I was not let down, with ten juniors entered and a number of them tasting competition for the first time, it was played in a very friendly atmosphere, but no shock to see the two very experienced Collins brothers make it to the final .It was a very open game with good forehand to forehand exchanges but with some top class backhands from Jake made the difference and he took the title.

I would just like to thank all those who entered and made it a good day.

NB: The club would like to thank Gary for his organization and running of the tournament
