Weekend Two Report :

2011/12

Division Three South & East - Bedford Modern II lead the way with 15 points out of 16 and they will be pleased with their weekend’s work. Olivier Autin (10 wins out of 11), Mick Harper (10 wins out of 12) and John Alsop (10 wins out of 15) have all contributed greatly to their success. They dropped their only point in round five against Hastings. Hastings no. one Paul Barry (eight wins out of eight) gave his side a strong platform to challenge from and he beat both Mick Harper (11-5, 11-6, 11-7) and Robert Swift (8-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-6). He still looks capable of being a very good no. three / four in the First Division. The scores were tied at 3-3 and Bedford Modern would have fancied their chances. However, it was David Butler who came through in three games to beat Olivier Autin 11-5, 11-6, 15-13 to give the Sussex side a 4-3 lead. John Alsop levelled the scores for a final time by beating Andrew Martin by a strange-looking scoreline of 11-0, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9.

Bedford Modern scored a vital 5-3 win over second placed Property Street Rowhedge in round six. They trailed 3-2 but came though very strongly to win 5-3. Olivier Autin picked up his second win, an important one, by getting the better of Andrew Mudie 11-8, 11-7, 4-11, 11-6 to level the scores at 3-3. The next game was close as well but it was the very experienced Mick Harper (Premier Division experience remember) who triumphed over four close games against Antony Greenwood (13-11, 12-14, 11-9, 11-7). Robert Swift sealed the Bedford Modern victory in the last game. He produced a flawless fourth and fifth game performance to beat Michael Andrews 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-2, 11-3.

Property Street Rowhedge secured the local bragging rights by beating Britannia Ipswich 7-1. Gary Young (12 wins out of 16) was Ipswich’s sole winner. He scored a fine victory over Andrew Mudie 11-7, 4-11, 11-8, 11-8 but thereafter it was the Colchester team who were calling the shots. Antony Greenwood won a close one against Wayne Shaw 12-10, 6-11, 7-11, 11-3, 11-8 and Steve Joslin defeated Gary Young 12-14, 11-9, 11-8, 11-5. Antony Greenwood also ran out an excellent 11-7, 12-14, 11-4, 13-11 winner against Andy Warner whilst Michael Andrews completed a very good Colchester team performance by getting the better of Wayne Shaw 11-4, 11-9, 11-9.

The match between fourth-placed Britannia Ipswich and fifth-placed Kingfisher II predictably ended as a 4-4 draw. Kingfisher’s Andy Misseldine and Britannia’s Aimee Sparkes shared the Player of the Match Award. Misseldine beat both Wayne Shaw (11-4, 11-7, 12-14, 9-11, 11-3) and Gary Young
(11-9, 11-8, 11-4) whilst Aimee Sparkes won both of her singles as well. She beat Chris Haynes 11-4, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8 and she secured a point for her team by getting the better of James Olsson 11-4, 12-10, 11-6 in the last game.

Kingfisher will not have been so pleased at drawing with bottom side - Urban Progress II. They made a good start with Andy Misseldine beating Zultan Kulics 11-8, 7-11, 11-4, 11-4 and Keith Newell getting the better of Daniel Wright 17-15, 11-8, 10-12, 13-11, But wins for Leon Thomosn and Anthony Constantinou levelled the scores. Keith Newell beat Anthony Constantinou 11-8, 12-10, 11-9 to give Kingfisher a 4-3 lead but it wasn’t enough to enable them to capture both points. Leon Thompson defeated Chris Haines 11-5, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9 to level the scores for a final time.

Generation 2 are in third place and they consolidated this position by beating fourth-placed Britannia Ipswich 5-3 in round six. Gary Young was the best of the Ipswich players and he beat both Ross Saxby (3-2) and Roger Hookey (by a most impressive 11-4 11-5, 11-9 margin) but it wasn’t enough. Billy Ho won both of his singles and this included a vital (if somewhat unusual) 16-18, 11-5, 11-6, 9-11, 11-1 win over Wayne Shaw. This result sealed the Generation 2 victory.

Krzystof Gaicki gave Morpeth Greenhouse TTK an excellent start in their match against Hastings. He beat David Butler 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 6-11, 11-9 in the opening game. But it wasn’t enough. Paul Barry, Nick Standen and Andrew Martin won the next seven singles with Paul Barry avenging his team-mate’s defeat by beating Krzystof Gaicki 11-9, 11-4, 11-7.

2010/11

Mixed results for Britannia.

In the second round of British League fixtures which took place last weekend (12th.&13th.December 2010) at

St.Neots, Britannia were unable to overcome the two top teams, although both match results did not really indicate

just how well the Britannia team had played with several of the contests going the full five ends.

However, the team did succeed against their other two opponents which meant they finished the weekend having

won two and lost two so should remain safely away from the relegation zone.

Gary and Paul each won 5 from 8, with Aimee winning 2 from 4, as did Jason who although not at his best did well

to secure the match winning game against Bognor Regis and also a win to avoid a team ‘whitewash’ against top

team Bedford. Ian won 1 from 4 with two of his three loses being decided at deuce in the fifth end, and off form

Ken yet to play regular TT this season battled hard but failed to win a match.
