Britannia TTC Closed Championships – 8th.&9th.May'10.

Kieran Bean triumphed over Thomas Banham to be the top boy; Rebecca Diss was outclassed by Natalie Wells, who became top girl. Ryan Collins showed that he’s got what it takes to be top man; Andy Warner hung on to his claim to be top vet; Andy Holmes claimed the title as top 50+ vet; and Lucy Zhu not only dominated ‘Pot Luck’ with Collins, but showed that she was no Charlie’s Angel (I know, that was Lucy Liu !) when she triumphed in the restricted.

The weekend of Saturday 8th May & Sunday 9th May 2010 saw some cracking table tennis being played over the two days by club member ranging in age from 11 to 70+.

Day one provided some spectacular table tennis being played by some of the clubs youngsters.

In the girls’ singles event, Rebecca Diss and Natalie Wells progressed to the final by safely negotiating the group stages. Rebecca was the less experienced of the two girls but nevertheless demonstrated that she was learning the game well. Both girls played some good shots but Natalie was clearly the more consistent player on the day, winning  5-11, 4-11, 3-11 to take the title.

In the boys’ singles event, Kieran Bean, Kriss Brill, Kieran Watts and Thomas Banham progressed to the semi final by powering their way through the group stages, with Thomas and Kieran (Bean) looking particularly impressive.

The final which produced some exciting and highly entertaining table tennis, Keiran (Bean) who beat Kriss Brill in a close semi-final, continued to dominate his opponent, Thomas Banham who had earlier beaten Keiran Watts in the other semi.

Each of them played some very good table tennis at this level, and although Thomas was the more attacking of the two, Kieran demonstrated a more (Andy) Warner style of play, which seemed to work well in this game, Keiran winning  the Boy’s Single title 11-8, 8-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9.

The continuation of the event on Sunday saw yet more exciting table tennis being played at a very high standard. Whilst some results were expected, there were also some major upsets.

Bob Jennings and John Seabrook, the two oldest competitors taking part, contested the 60+ Vets final with Bob Jennings causing an upset by beating Club Vice Chairman John Seabrook 13-11, 11-7, 11-7.

The 50+ Vets event was won by Andy Holmes, who beat Tim Diss in the final 11-6,11-3, 11-4.

Andy Warner retained his Veterans title after a narrow semi final escape with two wicked ‘nets’ against Club Chairman, Ken Lewis, beating  Andy Holmes in the final 11-2, 7-11, 11-6, 14-16, 11-5.

Ryan Collins showed just how good he really is, hardly being pushed in winning the Men’s Singles title beating Andy Warner in the final 8-11, 11-0, 12-10, 15-13.

The star of the whole event was undoubtedly 13 year old Lucy Zhu. Teaming up with Ryan Collins, Lucy and Ryan bulldozed their way to the final of the Pot Luck Doubles event where they met Andy Holmes and Bob Jennings, comfortably winning 11-3, 11-4, 9-11, 11-6.

Lucy Zhu continued in a rich vein of form, demonstrating resilience and a good all round game to cause a huge upset beating Brian Amos in the semi final of the Restricted Singles.

An even bigger upset was to follow as Lucy met Tim Diss in the final in an intriguing battle which ended with Lucy winning the title 11-8, 11-8, 5-11, 13-11.

Lucy Zhu – strong forehand loop

Superb results for Lucy, probably the youngest ever winner of the Restricted Singles title, and who is without doubt a very talented young lady and a name to watch out for in the future.

April 2010

The Britannia Top 16 took place at the Dome on Sunday 11th.April,2010.

 Report Courtesey of Andy Dosher.

With all entries taken well in advance of the event it was one of the strongest and well supported in years.

The players came from Middlesex, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Lancashire.

With a round robin section of four players the top two players on games won and lost went through to the championship section with the third and fourth placed players going through to a separate section.

The seedings proved largely accurate in all the groups apart from a couple of instances.

In group one Neil Charles was in cruise control and although he dropped one set to Tony West he never looked like losing to anyone, West won the all important encounter to decide who would also qualify by beating Steve Kerns 3-1.

In group two number five seed Matt Spiro came unstuck against big hitting Lee Barnes who won their match in straight games. Despite the early set back, Spiro gave tournament number two seed Ryan Collins a hard game and only just lost 11-9 in the fifth set.

In group three the number six seed Andrew Warner took out perhaps his biggest ever scalp by beating Paul Cicchelli the player ranked 91 in the country in a five set slog, however both player progressed winning their other games.

The fourth group was particularly hard as there were four players who potentially on their day could qualify, in the end it was Jake Collins and Essex's Keiron Lally that finished first and second respectively, from Tim Avis and Andrew Dosher

In the second series of matches the main focus centred on the championship section:

The first quarter final was undoubtedly the best game of the day, it featured the number one seed Neil Charles and the third seed Paul Cicchelli, after taking the first set in style Charles raced ahead in the second but after some breathtaking returns from Cicchelli the game was all square, the match eventually went to a fifth set and Cicchelli  just wouldn’t lie down again retrieving from all over the court forcing Charles into mistakes, Charles though was extremely cool under pressure and after holding a number of match points he edged home by the narrowest of margins.

In the other quarters, Jake Collins was in top form to despatch Barnes 3-0, and Andrew Warner and Tony West played out an open affair with Warner winning 3-1, in the last quarter Keiron Lally took the first set off Ryan Collins but then found out himself under the hammer losing the next three.

In the semis Warner who up until then had had a great day was somewhat out classed by his county team mate Ryan losing comfortably 3-0, and in the other semi Jake was beaten somewhat closer but also in straight games by Charles so the final was between the number one and number two seeds.

Ryan had taken a set off Charles in the I&Dist.TTL  final a few weeks before and in a tight and exciting opening set lead by a few points at the end of it.

Charles though with slick serving and deft touch had the power and armoury in reserve to play his way out of trouble and edged it 14-12, frustration for Ryan increased as he couldn’t find a way in during the second set and was outclassed to 4 points.

Ryan showed his grit and determination in the third set and like the first end he matched his higher ranked opponent in some breathtaking rallies, unfortunately again at deuce it was Charles that did just enough to secure victory in his first ever appearance at these championships where it takes a very good player to win the title.

BTTC Chairman

Hi All,

WANTED - "Press, Promotions & Publicity Officer".

We urgently need someone to take on this important role which can be as simple as sending reports provided to the local newspapers, or if you had sufficient time, preparing reports including photos etc. for circulation on a wider basis. Perhaps develop a monthly members newscast etc., the development possibilities of this role are endless !!

As you will no doubt have noticed, despite being the biggest and, probably, the most sucessfull TT club in the area, we have a distict failing/lacking as a club when it comes to obtaining publicity of any kind.

With the possible exception of the website, it is seldom, if ever, that you will find any mention elsewhere of Britannia TTC.

If you are the person willing to give it a try, or know of someone suitable who might be willing to, please let me know ASAP.

COME ON - PLEASE, PLEASE, GET INVOLVED AND HELP THE CLUB 'GROW'.

Regards,
Ken.
